The phase-out of lead from aluminum alloys is getting closer and closer: on December 12, 2025, the update to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU was published, marking its application in the electrical and electronic sectors.
By June 12, 2027, the last exemption for machined aluminum alloys with a lead content above 0.4% by weight will expire, representing a decisive step for the entire European metallurgical industry. In fact, the transition does not only concern aluminum, but also involves other materials: the currently permitted limits for steel (0.35%) and copper alloys, where lead content is presently allowed up to 4%, will be progressively phased out.
In the context of the review of exemptions provided by the RoHS Directive, the possibility of assessing potential alternatives to lead was the subject of a technical-scientific study conducted at the European level, known as the “Pack 22,” which involved several stakeholders in the supply chain, including Eural Gnutti, the European Aluminium Association, and some end users of semi-finished products.
The conclusions of “Pack 22” confirm the machining performance and results achieved by Eural through its LEAD FREE project, dedicated to the development of free-cutting, totally lead-free aluminium alloys. This process led to the development of a diversified range of alloys: 6026LF – ideal for anodizing and hig-speed machining – 2033 – guarantee of process continuity and productivity, the best alternative to 2011 alloy – and, last but not least, 2077 – the perfect combination of superior mechanical performance, excellent surface finish, and behavior that allows achieving tight tolerances.
In addition to ensuring regulatory compliance, LEAD FREE aluminum represents a strategic choice for industrial decarbonization: its light weight, corrosion resistance, recyclability, and low energy impact make it an efficient, sustainable, and competitive material.
